Harold von Braunhut -
the man who discovered Sea Monkeys

Harold von Braunhut invented X-Ray Specs (“see through your hand, see through clothes!”) and Invisible Goldfish (complete with glass bowl, invisible goldfish food and a cast-iron guarantee that their owners would never see them), but he will always e remembered as the man who "discovered" Sea Monkeys.

Born in New York in 1926, Harold first came across Sea Monkeys in a tin of fish food in 1957 and immediately saw the potential to market these fascinating creatures that survived in suspended animation until introduced to water.

As a child, he would have been no stranger to "flea circuses" where people were willing to believe that imaginary fleas were performing all manner of tricks (ask your Mum or Dad about Michael Bentine's Potty Time).  He hoped to market these little shrimps along similar lines - with the added benefit that you could actually see these little shrimps.

When he first launched his Instant Life kits, very few shops were willing to stock them, and so he turned to placing ads in comics.  Still sales were poor, but Harold von Braunhut was no quitter.  Instead he renamed his Instant Life kits as Sea Monkeys and never looked back.

Soon the world was awash with Sea Monkey products including the Ocean Zoo, a Sea Monkey Circus (complete with audience and ticket booth), and the Deluxe Sea Monkey Speedway set so that you could race your Sea Monkeys!

Harold died in 2003 before he could unleash his latest offerings - a pet lobster and the world's first instant frog.

Harold von Braunhut - we salute you!
