 What Are Triops? Triops are of small tadpole shrimp who go under the Latin name of Nostraca. The Triops is often described as a living fossil because it has lived on Earth for 300 million years, right back to the Carboniferous Age and before the birth of the dinosaur. The Triop gets its name because it looks like it has three eyes. A tricycle has three wheels, a tripod three legs and a Triops what look like three eyes. Triops eggs enter a state of extended diapause when dry, allowing the Triops to survive in a state of suspending animation. Interestingly, the diapause also prevents the eggs from hatching too soon after rain. The pool must fill with enough water for the dormancy to be broken and the eggs to hatch. No wonder they have survived for 300 million years! Triops and Sea Monkeys are similar in that they are both a type of shrimp, but they are not the same thing.
