![]() What Are Sea Monkeys? Sea Monkeys aren't actually monkeys at all and you don't find them in the sea. Then again sea lions aren't actually lions and seahorses aren't actually horses. Sea Monkeys are in fact a type of brine shrimp (posh name Artemia) . Brine shrimps are found in inland saltwater lakes all over the world and have changed little since the Triassic Age when dinosaurs first walked the Earth. The secret of their survival? Their eggs can live in a state of suspended animation called cryptobiosis for up to two years, waiting for the right living conditions to come along. If a pond dries up, no problem. The eggs won't hatch until it rains and the pond has water in it again. Clever. Sea Monkeys are a hybrid brine shrimp, bred to live longer and grow bigger than a bog standard brine shrimp. Fully grown, they measure about a quarter of an inch (0.6cm) in length. It takes about four weeks for a Sea Monkey to grow from an almost invisible little shrimp to full size. Sea Monkey eggs are freeze dried and then put into packets to be sold. You also receive a Water Purifier packet and Growth Food with a Sea Monkeys kit. Just add water! Once the water is prepared as per the instructions (remember, Sea Monkeys are salt water creatures), you add the Sea Monkey eggs to the water and within hours they still start to hatch. You then feed them, but not too much - once a week is plenty. Once fully grown, Sea Monkeys start to reproduce so there will be no need to buy more eggs. |
